History of the Center

The Syracuse Center for the Performing Arts is a non-profit organization dedicated to the presentation of exhibits, performances, workshops and community projects. The building was designed by architect Gordon A. Wright. Construction started in 1921, and the first service was held in February 1923.

The building has a seating capacity of 700, and is a combination of Greek and modern architecture. The roof is a copper dome set in a Greek shell collar with a cupola overlooking the city. The building has an elegant lobby area with marble floors and ornate ceilings and moldings. it's arched shaped lead glass windows were designed and manufactured by Henry Keck, a local stained glass company. The Grand hall has four custom brass chandeliers, and a E. M. Skinner organ which was installed in 1927 at a cost of $27,000. The restoration of the organ was completed in 1980, stage upgrades were completed in 2006. ADA compliance and renovations are currently being addressed. A new elevator is planned for the center and donations are being requested.
